Fats, oils and grease seems harmless, but indeed it is not.

When in liquid form, it is being beckoned by the kitchen sink. Seems like the easy solution. However, when the fat, oil or grease cools (even if you blast it with hot water on its way down), it hardens and sticks to the pipe walls. Do this over enough holidays and bam, when you expect it the least, a clogged pipe or worse yet, a burst pipe. Merry Christmas. Kids, Santa came last night and uh, the reindeer needed a bathroom break so decided to use our basement.

The simple fix is to properly dispose of your fats, oils and greases properly (and let this be a reminder as to why your doctor is trying to get you to cut out greasy foods from your diet).

I take the time each week to review all the comments on our YouTube channel, blog, Facebook page, Twitter feed, etc. There are a copious amount of requests for dusting cheats. Here are 10 quickies that will cut your cleaning time and most of them won't cost you much. I'm all about figuring out shortcuts that will not affect the outcome of the task, or better yet, improve upon it altogether.

So in no particular order, here you go:

10 - Ceiling fans and light fixtures - use a bendable duster to do this, you won't need a ladder (unless you have really high ceilings), you can bend to suit any light configuration (including a ceiling fan, just bend 90 degrees), and you can remove the cover and machine wash. I got this one at Wal Mart and it cost me under 8 bucks.

9 - Corners, moldings and door frames - spiderwebs and dust aplenty here. This area usually goes ignored, but here's the laziest, easiest way to do it. Grab a mop pole and old sport sock, flip the sock inside out and place over the end of the mop pole. Now, you've got an amazing high-duster! You can also use microfiber cloth secured around the pole with an elastic band.

8 - Walls - we get asked this a lot. I personally don't dust my walls, but if it is something that needs to be done, you can simply use a flat head mop (like a Swiffer) and use a Microfiber cloth sprayed with a bit of water. No need to use an expensive product here! Simply work the tool up and down the wall using a 'W' pattern to save time and energy and to ensure you are covering the entire space.

7 - Bathroom vents - these get super dusty - they run for a long time and suck up tons of dust. The next time you're cleaning, use your vacuum with brush attachment to suck up the dust. Now, your vents won't look like those of a mechanic's shop.

6 - Baseboards - revert to trick # 9, use a mop pole with a cloth or old sock attached to it, lightly sprayed. No more bending down, no more tough work. This makes the job so much easier and also allows you to access hard-to-reach areas like behind furniture.

5 - Delicate items - to clean ornaments, antique pieces, silk flowers or small delicate trinkets, lightly mist a small paintbrush and use that to do detailed dusting.

4 - Dust in the right direction - dust is like snow; it falls from the top to the bottom. So, when dusting, start with the highest items and work your way down to the lowest. If you don't, you'll have to repeat your work. Another good thing to keep in mind is to work in a spiral formation - working clockwise tackle all four corners and mouldings, then move down and dust all tops of frames, etc, lower again to dust all table tops and finally all baseboards. Then vacuum. Do you see how this allows no dust to fall on an already cleaned area?

3 - Use microfiber cloths - I've been spouting off about them for years. I can't understand why you would dust with anything else - it makes you spend more time cleaning! A microfiber cloth is electrostatically charged, meaning it literally attracts dust. It is also highly absorbent so it can last longer during your cleaning task. They won't leave lint or dust behind and leave surfaces streak-free.

2 - Clean your ducts every 5 years. That's a huge source of dust and allergens and if you have had renovations recently or have lived in the house after someone else has, this is the ultimate form of dusting. A vehicle will come by and vacuum your vents out, leaving no residual dust in the home environment due to dirty vents.

1 - To vacuum delicate areas or areas where you can't see, vacuum with a pantyhose covered dust brush. The nozzle can now collect dust while using a dust brush without running the risk of sucking up valuables or items you don't want vacuumed up!

OK, back to business:

We gave one away with our 5000 subscriber video and I was secretly jealous...I wanted one. Would you believe, Santa brought me one? Kidding, bought it.

We put it to the test to see how well it did. I already own a Dyson canister vacuum and it's flippin' awesome. It is a bit of a project to get out and wheel around though, I'll tell you that, which reduces my impetus to do in-between cleans. But the fact remains, messes happen and we need to deal with them. Enter the DC30. We were debating purchasing the DC34 Animal since we have 2 major shedders in the house. We opted to save the money.

Build quality: amazing. Exactly like the other Dyson I own. Well constructed, quality parts. It's light enough to use (super light) but not too light where you would question the quality.

Battery: it runs the same from the moment the battery is charged to the moment the battery dies (all 6 minutes of it). A bit of a sad scenario, I wish it lasted a little longer...

Brushes and attachments: Good, although if you have pets you definitely want to get the pet attachment (a.k.a. the 'Animal' version).

Ease of use: very easy to clean, use and store.

We tested it on every surface that the brocuure claimed it could be used for. I think it worked really well. The attachments have been designed to clean and clean well, I really like the small gap in the crevice tool which allows for large pieces to be picked up (unlike the Swiffer Sweeper Vac, remember that review?). The combination tool was useful for cleaning upholstery as well as baseboards, dusting blinds and lampshades etc.

So the bottom line is this. If you have a handheld vacuum and think it sucks (like, bad sucks), then this one is the one to consider because the suction is actually amazing (sucks so good!). Read my blog post for the full breakdown and review and breakdown of specs.

OK, back to business:

I just got an iPhone 5 to replace my very old school iPhone 3Gs 8 gig (I know, how DID I survive)? And I was very excited to see the beautiful aluminum case as well. However, I'm a bit of a phone whipper, tosser and slider. I don't really treat it all that nicely. I've spent a lot of time learning about how to clean electronics properly (and of course cleaning them), so I've decided to update an old video we have and demonstrate how to clean a newer gen smartphone. My iPhone 5 arrival was a perfect opportunity to do this.

Firstly, don't clean it using your clothing, a paper towel or a tissue. These all can scratch as well as cling on to tiny debris which can and will scratch your beautiful glass screen. Use a microfiber cloth - an OPTICAL microfiber cloth. They're readily available and easy to use.

Secondly, no product allowed! Your phone (even if it's not an iPhone) has numerous coatings on it including an oleophobic coating, an anti-static coating and an anti-glare coating. Product will erode these coatings and that will harm the functionality of your phone. Use your breath or a teeny tiny amount of water placed on the cloth and then used to polish the glass or aluminum.

Finally, consider screen protectors and phone cases. These kept my old iPhone 3GS in great shape. I am waiting to see what Otter Box comes out with and I'll likely grab a Commuter series model. I also use screen protectors. They are super overpriced so far as I am concerned, but worth it when I consider the fact that my phone sits in my purse among $4.64 worth of change, a wad of keys, 2 pens, bobby pins and lip gloss. It's got a snowball's chance in hell of staying pristine.

I am a little disappointed that Apple didn't include an optical cloth with the new phone, I got one with my 3GS (I suppose when Apple slimmed the iPhone 5, they also slimmed the budget). Whatever, it's worth the purchase.

Hairbrushes are similar to sponges or carpets. They harbour a whole bunch of unwanted stuff. They trap hair (of course), dust, dirt, oils, old product and can even trap dust mites.

This is what really got me: each time you brush with an unclean hairbrush, you actually re-deposit grease, product, dust and dead skin cells back into your hair. Need a barf bag? Further, your brush smells and loses efficacy when it's clogged up (no surprise there). If that is not motivation enough to clean your brushes, I don't know what is!

This is not a one-size-fits-all solution since different brushes require different treatments. So, I've got below how to clean a plastic or metal paddle and round brush, how to clean a plastic or metal comb and how to clean a wooden brush with natural bristles (or a mix of nylon and natural)....
